As the weather begins cooling, Plumbline is turning up the heat!

I am very excited about introducing a new monthly hosting service for Microsoft Dynamics solutions. Partners can now offer their customers a lower cost software purchase option by taking advantage of Plumbline's Software as a Service (SaaS) Program. With this program, customers access their business applications, such as Microsoft Dynamics SL or GP, CRM, SharePoint and Exchange, over the internet (cloud computing) for a monthly fee. Advantages include lower-priced user licensing and reduced investment and maintenance costs for equipment, resources and support for their business applications, since there is nothing to be physically managed at their location. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me directly.

Plumbline Consulting is also preparing a program that will be offered this fall - DynamicsDownloads. This new service was pre-announced to the Dynamics SL User Group Fall Event last month (see the "Upcoming Events" section below for a recap of this year's event).  We will be hosting a website where customers & partners can view, purchase and download SL Add-On Solutions. ISVs (as well as partners and customers that have developed custom applications, screens or reports) will have the opportunity to upload their solutions to the Dynamics Download portal for greater visibility and ease of getting their products to market. Go to www.DynamicsDownloads.com to register, and stay tuned for more details about this exciting program!

All PSS products are sold with UNLIMITED users!

Fixed Assets for Dynamics SL, PSS’s starship product, allows customers to efficiently track and manage their company's fixed assets.  PSS Fixed Assets seamlessly integrates with Dynamics SL’s Accounts Payable, General Ledger, and Project Controller modules.   PSS Fixed Assets can also be used with handheld barcode scanners for faster asset inventory handling.  The Asset Service module tracks service requirements, maintenance schedules, and cost of repairs.  To learn more about the benefits Fixed Assets for Dynamics SL provides, visit the Progressive System Solutions website at http://www.progsys.net/products.aspx?id=ASSETS.  Please review the expansive list of other solutions developed by PSS on their website, and see which ones will meet your business needs!  (If you don’t see what you need, they can create it for you; ask about custom development.)

Can customers on SL 6.5 take advantage of Business Ready Licensing (BRL)?

Yes, BRL is available for customers running Microsoft Dynamics SL 6.5. It works a bit differently in SL 6.5 then it works in SL 7.  For a customer on SL 7 you would be given a key for advanced management (A1) or business essentials (B1). Since Microsoft Dynamics SL 6.5 was released before the new licensing keys for BRL were created, a customer moving to BRL would get all the keys associated with advanced management or business essentials and you will need to manually add each module to the registration screen. If your customer already has BP installed and would like to take advantage of features added by going to BRL, you can use these steps to add access without a re-install:

1. Log into the BP server with the account used to perform the initial BP installation.

2. Insert the BP disc into the machine and begin the installation process. Since BP is already installed, it will recognize this and provide options to change the configuration.

3. Select the Add/Remove Features option and it should pickup if there are any changes available.

Error when trying to generate a report to Excel format in FRx 6.7, SP9

If you are running FRx version 6.7.with Service Pack 9 (build 6.7.9111) and receive an “Error 91 – Object Variable or with Block Variable” when exporting FRx reports to Excel, this may be due to a bug.  An updated Client Setup Utility for FRx 6.7 Service Pack 9 has been made available for download from CustomerSource and PartnerSource to resolve this issue. You may also contact Microsoft Technical Support to obtain hot fix 937529 as an alternate resolution. This problem was first corrected in FRx 6.7 Service Pack 10.

SRS Reports will not work in SL 7 releases

SRS reports that were created by using Visual Studio 2008 or Business Intelligence Development Studio 2008 will not work correctly in Microsoft Dynamics SL. To work around this problem, recreate the custom SRS report by using Visual Studio 2005 or Business Intelligence Development Studio 2005.

Negotiation Strategy

“Negotiation is entirely a game of give and take, and it is vital in preparing to do business that you take an inventory of your bargaining possessions. These are always ‘add-ons’ and ‘take-offs’.  I always try to have several peripheral issues to raise, things I would like to include but could live without, as an inducement for protecting what I consider the heart of the contract.  If I get these fringe requests, so much the better. But, if I have to discard them, I do so one by one, and very slowly, so that the other side will appreciate the fact that I am compromising, that I am not winning every point and getting everything that I ask for – and neither should they.  Being able to give away a few things creates some goodwill and reciprocity.”

Friendly Persuasion

Recap of the Dynamics User Group SL Fall Conference:

The Dynamics SL User Group Fall Event, held in San Diego September 16th – 18th had a record number of attendees this year – in fact a 25% growth over last year!  150 members representing 81 companies from 27 states participated and enjoyed great sessions, the vendor expo, food, weather and networking.

The event kicked off with a tour of the “Geeks.com” facility, allowing attendees to see how this customer has been successful using Dynamics SL as the core of their systems.  Microsoft representatives provided both the opening keynote and the closing keynote addresses.  In between, there were 27 sessions conducted over the 2 day conference.  One of the best reasons for attending the SL User Group Events is the networking – meeting constituents and discussing similar challenges in the workplace and to learn what solutions have been used to solve them.

Plumbline Consulting was pleased to be the Premier Sponsor for the Conference this year.  Todd Michael introduced the Opening Key Note and participated in several sessions, including Best Practices in Upgrading.

Remember, Microsoft is providing attendees with a 15% discount on additional licenses purchased through November 20th!
