Check out the first part in our three-part series about Business Portal!

This is the second in a three-part series focused on Business Portal for Microsoft Dynamics™ SL. This article discusses how we can assist you with implementing the system remotely, as well as tailoring the system to meet customer needs, with a focus on project management and accounting applications.

Remote Implementations — As you respond to the demands of installing Business Portal for Microsoft Dynamics SL, contact us for information on how we can assist you with remote implementations. Since Business Portal is a Web portal, everything needed to get the module implemented can be done remotely with our guidance. This saves you the time and expenses incurred when traveling to and from a client’s office. The time you save can be spent pursuing additional leads.

Customizations — In everything we do in life, there is always more left to be done. That is definitely the case with software. After you install Business Portal for Microsoft Dynamics SL in your client’s office, you may find that there is additional functionality they would like to see in the product. Contact us for assistance tailoring the solution to your client’s requirements. Our rich knowledge of the project management and accounting applications enables us to provide a wide variety of custom solutions, from additional queries and reports to additional Web pages and links to SharePoint sites. Combining readily available data with Business Portal allows the customer to access all of their data within a single secure location.

Next month, we focus on deployment, platform extensions leveraging the Business Portal SDK, and integrating other packages (such as InfoPath) with Business Portal for Microsoft Dynamics SL.

At Plumbline Solutions, we value hearing from you. Are there specific Hints and Tips, Solutions of the Month, or other information you would like to see in our monthly newsletter? If so, please send your requests to Adam Lauth at t-alauth@plumblinesolutions.com, and we will do our best to fulfill them.

Last month's solution showed you how to create a new Business Portal query called Today's Sales on the Sales Order page. Now, do you want to share a query among users? Any new or modified query is user specific—only that user will see it. If you want to share the query with others, the Business Portal Administrator will need to move the query.

Here are the steps to move a query:

1. Make note of the page, the name of the query that you want to move, and the name of the user who owns the query. In this example, we'll use Today's Sales on the Sales Order page.

2. Go to Site Settings | Portal Elements | Organize Queries.

3. Click the plus sign to expand the DataViewer folder to show the Sales Orders folder and under it, the folder of the user who created the query. You should see the Today's Sales query.

4. Click Today's Sales, and then click the Move to Folder button.

5. In the Browse for Folder dialog box, expand the DataViewer folder.

6. Click Sales Orders, and then click the OK button.

The query has been moved, and all those who have access to the Sales Order page will be able to use it.

Use caution when moving or deleting queries. If the wrong query is moved, the page associated with it may not function correctly. If you're not sure, back up your system database before making a change.
