Newsletter - February 2006
Exciting changes have arrived for
Application Server and Business Portal in Microsoft Dynamics™ SL
(formerly Microsoft® Business Solutions–Solomon)
Release 6.5.
In the past, you had to run Application Server on a dedicated
computer that was locked behind a server room door to keep it
secure. This was because locking the machine, allowing the computer
Application Server was running on to go into “sleep mode,” or
running Application Server over a terminal server connection
suspended the processing of submitted reports until the Application
Server screen regained focus.
In Microsoft Dynamics SL 6.5, this problem was solved. Application
Server now lets you run the process using a locked system or a
terminal server connection. And additional changes were made to
resolve the memory locking issues you may have experienced in the
past.
Improvements were also made in Business Portal, which now not only
offers Intranet access, but also provides the option of Internet
access to Microsoft Dynamics SL database information. This is a
great feature if you are on the road and need access to your data.

Partners, how often do you hear a client
say that they need the ability to enter data one time and have
it populate everything necessary within Microsoft Dynamics™ SL?
Or a request to enter data remotely and then find out that
“remotely” means the person is disconnected from Microsoft
Dynamics SL?
We can assist you in creating a solution
that captures data while the user is disconnected and then
easily transmits it to a location for processing. We can help
you develop solutions that support your customers' needs to
increase productivity and profitability in a mobile environment.
Microsoft® InfoPath® 2003 creates
easy-to-use forms that capture the data and transmit it for
processing, helping you connect the Information Worker to the
information. Such solutions significantly reduce sales cycle
time, timecard entry, and project accuracy.
For example, an order form
created in InfoPath 2003 can be used to capture customer order
information when an account manager is at a customer's
office. Because the InfoPath form “remembers” the product
information from the last time the account manager was connected
to Microsoft Dynamics SL, errors in details such as product code
or price are eliminated. The new order is saved within the form.
When the account manager has access to an Internet connection,
she sends the order to the head office in an e-mail message. The
sales clerk opens the e-mail and with a single button-click,
submits the order to the Microsoft Dynamics SL system. The order
is processed. The sales clerk sends order status details back to
the account manager, who now has all of the information she
needs to follow up with the customer regarding their order. What
might have taken days to accomplish is completed in a matter of
hours with a custom solution created by Plumbline Solutions
using InfoPath 2003 forms. The result is another satisfied
customer!

Security Policy ChangesIn
Microsoft Dynamics™ SL (formerly Microsoft® Business
Solutions–Solomon) Release 6.0 Service Pack 1, a new security policy
was introduced. Beginning with this service pack, secure passwords
are required for all users of the software. For security
information, including guidelines for creating strong passwords,
download the white paper “Security
Guidelines for Microsoft Dynamcs SL”.
There are also security changes in the
Microsoft Dynamics SL user rights area that affect the running of
some processes in the Financial Management modules. If you plan to
upgrade to Release 6.5 from an earlier release without first
installing 6.0 Service Pack 1, review
Microsoft Knowledge Base article 900640. This article lists the
minimum user rights that are required to release various batches in
the Financial Management modules. If you created group or user
rights before upgrading to 5.5 Service Pack 4, 6.0 Service Pack 1,
or 6.5, be sure to review the user rights after the upgrade to
verify that everything will work properly going forward.
